God Says Yes To Me

by Kaylin Haught

I asked God if it was okay to be melodramatic
and she said yes
I asked her if it was okay to be short
and she said it sure is
I asked her if I could wear nail polish
or not wear nail polish
and she said honey
she calls me that sometimes
she said you can do just exactly
what you want to
Thanks God I said
And is it even okay if I don't paragraph
my letters
Sweetcakes God said
who knows where she picked that up
what I'm telling you is
Yes Yes Yes

And with that, Ms. Haught suddenly leapfrogs almost to the top of my favorite poets list! How could I not love a goddess who calls me sweetcakes, and sanctions melodrama?

What a lovely reminder that the God of Our Understanding is a loving God... and miracles do happen. I was watching a program on TV about a young boy who wanted to capture the blue butterfly and he was afflicted with an incurable brain tumor with a short time to live. His mother put him in contact with a butterfly expert who agreed to take him to the jungle and while there he became ill, but the natives treated him and he had a transforming experience. When he returned home, the doctors discovered his tumor was gone. Was it the native treatment or the transforming event - or both together that precipitated healing?
